Learn the Eight Principles of Wing Tsun!

Wing Tsun is a branch of martial arts that follows eight principles in order to form a self defense system that helps a person adapt to the size, style of fighting and strength of their opponent. There are four fighting principles and four energy principles in Wing Tsun. Learning these principles will help you to develop your self defense skills!
- Go Forward – By advancing on your opponent right away, you can defend against their initial striking action, or be the first to strike. This sudden advance also surprises your attacker and puts you at an advantage to fight using your tactile reflexes instead of visual cues.
- Aim at the Center – When your opponent is blocking your attacks, it is important that you aim at the center of your opponent, instead of at their limbs.
- Yield to a Greater Force – Because you cannot be stronger than every opponent you fight against, it is important to learn how to defend against a stronger person’s attacks. By training your reflexes, you can learn to avoid an attack and strategize a new plan of attack.
- Follow Through – When your opponent retreats, it is important to follow through with your attack, to ensure that your opponent doesn’t have time or opportunity to recover and re-strategize.
The four energy principles are:
- Give Up Your Own Force – You will be more effective against your opponent if you are able to release the tension in yourself. You need to be calm in order to react correctly to your opponent’s actions.
- Get Rid of Your Opponent’s Force – In order to defeat a stronger opponent, it is important that you are prepared to move an opponent’s force away from yourself and avoid their attacks.
- Use Your Opponent’s Force – By reacting with your opponent’s moves, you can use their force to your advantage. Use the energy that your opponent uses on you to guide your movements.
- Use Your Own Force – It is important to use your own force in conjunction with your opponent’s force in your attacks.
By using these principles, students of Wing Tsun can train themselves to defend against a wide variety of opponents. No matter the size or strength of your opponent, you can use your trained reflexes to defend yourself!
